Ghost Signs of New York
In the process of writing Fading Ads of London my hunt for ghost signs did not stop at the fringes of the capital. I photographed fading adverts wherever I went and last year I went on my honeymoon to New York. I know that photographing old typography isn’t exactly the traditional honeymoon activity but there was simply so much typography everywhere I had no choice but to take a couple (of hundred) shots. Gratefully, my husband knew about all my geeky vices before we said ‘I do’ so he was pretty good about how many times we had to stop at crossings or take a detour so I could get a better photograph. These are just a small selection of the photos I took. Some favourites. I simply don’t have the webspace to post them all. But you get the gist.
It’s interesting to know there are similar sights in America.
Oh yes, all over the world! The Ghostsigns UK webpage posts them from pretty much everywhere!
There are two books about the ghostsigns in New York, ‘Fading Ads of New York City’ and ‘The Writing on the Wall’. Also walking tours and more: http://www.ghostsigns.co.uk/tag/new-york
There are SO many signs there. You could write a book about Queens alone. Not even looking at Manhattan!
